"Marisa Abaza is a Brooklyn based photographer. She has started shooting New York City cyclists and then having them write(in their own handwriting) a small story, idea or feeling about themselves and bikes onto a small peice of paper placed next to the actual photo."

I came across this project. It gives a cool feeling. I like. Thought I would share. I'm going riding now...

Everyone knows that print media is dying. This industry is going to have to do something, and do something quickly, to right the rising tide of the changes in the way people currently view/interact with media.

This project made me inspiried in the ability of the print industry to change. Check it out:

An intelligent, consistently updated, free online journal. Worth a read, and a bit of time. It's not an instant gratification type thing, but time put in will be returned tenfold. Thanks for the link Sara.

tuesday: : skinner

Mike Skinner's one of my favorite storytellers. A modern day oral historian if you will...

He just put out a new album called 'Everything Is Borrowed'. His latest stuff isn't at the top of my list, but I always appreciate his perspective and his ability to create personal reflection. I must admit I miss the less hooky chorus based stuff of his previous albums. This album feels a lot more peaceful, quite fitting for these days of worldwide turmoil. Regardless, it's always great to hear new stuff from Skinner.

Two tracks off the new album and two great old ones.

And on a final note, take a minute today to appreciate those who came before us.

I've been thinking about the depression of the 30's, and if we're about to go into the same situation. I came across this old radio recording and found it really interesting. Give it a listen. Some perspective in there. Old voices recalling times long ago. It's a bit long but worth it...

I stumbled across an artist by the name of Lykke Li. Her first album is titled Youth Novels. It's beautiful. I'd post the whole album but then I'd feel bad. Check out the three tracks below. They're all great, but my favorite is 'Time Flies'. I'm really excited to see what this artist produces in the future...

wednesday: : everyone likes a little drama.

Drama, people resigning over elections. And censorship I guess... but if you own the magazine, you can do whatever you want... But really, what does this say about Storm Mountain Publishing (AKA. Freeskier, owner of Snowboard)?

These are mock-up covers for two of North America's leading snowboard
publications, and neither will ever see the light of day...
Both these covers, at one point, were in serious consideration... here is the
easy breakdown.

WHO: Rider: Jesse Burtner. Photographer: Mike Yoshida. Workers: Krush
Kulezsa and his dedicated park staff.

WHAT: an Idea I had for the cover of an all political issue for snowboarder
magazine. It was canned by snowboarder first (even though the concept was
green-lit and given the "awesome Idea" button. Canned in the end because of it's
"imagery." What?) , then canned by snowboard mag.

WHEN: Shot in the spring, with hopes for it to be on the stands NOW!

WHERE: Summit at Snoqualmie with Krush and his entire crew. They ruled so
hard.

WHY: Because voting and politics are fun, important, and empowering. And
seeing as how the magazines won't themselves make it to the surface, you better
get an idea of A. what we were going for, and B. why we were stopped.

There is no "basically" about this scenario. I am not completely trashing
these publications, and I must let you know how highly I hold Snowboarder's Pat
Bridges and Tom Monterosso and Snowboard's Jeff Baker and Larry Nunez amongst
most others at these mags. it's the presidents/CEOs that I'm going for. They
are terrible for the sport and all of its participants, and could care less
about the content of the magazines, just as long as it stays away from politics.

These photographs were in the running for the October issue of Snowboarder
before being pulled for a few vague reasons, leading me to give my resignation
as Senior Editor. Snowboard's crew was so hyped on the photo, and it was on its
way to the printer when the president of the mag had it pulled, for reason of
personal political interest. Awesome. How about a different life for these
fellows of money grubbing grubbingness, eh?

So now, please do as you will with these photos, but let them be seen. If you
are interested in getting a copy of either of them, let me know, and I will
direct you to Mike Yoshida. And boycott all publications trying to steer their
audiences down a road of DUMB and EASY! Write to these magazines and tell them
what you want. If you want email addresses, contact me.

Challenge. Challenge. Yeah.

Wicked.

BenfeE.

wednesday: : fine art appreciation

This is my last semester of university. I think I might have mentioned that before. Part of that joy, and I really mean joy, is that I could select whatever classes I wanted. Any subject, any course, I'm done all the requirements. One class I chose was Issues in Fine Art. I thought this class was going to be rad. But now, in our 6th week it's clear that it sucks. It's so theoretical sometimes I forget that the art we're looking at is actually trying to express something. I agree that the time frame and construction/technique of the piece is important, but God, it feels like we're missing the point. Anyway. That boring rant brings me to this inverted cross we have in the main room of our home. I wonder what my teacher would tell me about it. What is it saying? About myself? or is that a reflection of our culture? or both? Maybe i should write a paper on it or something.
