2007 03 19 : Vonnegut

posted by Anthony Boronowski
I've been reading a bunch of Vonnegut as of late and my friend Estelle sent me this. I found it quite fitting this day in age.

I think about my education sometimes. I went to the University of Chicago for a while after the Second World War. I was a student in the Department of Anthropology. At that time, they were teaching that there was absolutely no difference between anybody. They may be teaching that still.
Another thing they taught was that nobody was ridiculous or bad or disgusting. Shortly before my father died, he said to me, "You know--you never wrote a story with a villain in it."
I told him that was one of the things I learned in college after the war.

2007 03 18 : What inspires you?

posted by Anthony Boronowski
I did an interview this morning, and during the process of questioning I was asked ‘what inspires you?’. A pretty typical question, and one which is so vague it can be answered in so many different ways it’s retarded. I’m tired of answering these questions with a list of artists or people who inspire me, so I went into what inspires me on a daily basis. And really what I can up with was people.

The term people is also quite vague, probably vaguer than a list of artists or whatever. But when I broke it down, I came to the realization that it’s our choices as people which make me inspired. Those decisions we make to be positive or negative, go right or left, to take the well maintained or beaten track which really inspires me. How once people begin to take responsibility in their choices what is possible becomes no longer a thought, but a reality. The belief in one’s self and the acknowledgement of each persons potential, and then acting upon it is what makes people so inspiring to me.

This ultimately ranges from anything, from everyday life choices, being positive, giving energy to those around you, or to broader things, like going for that dream which you’ve always wanted to pursue and taking that risk, stepping off the end of that long dock of comfort and not knowing when you’ll hit the water below, or even knowing what that water will be like, never mind if you can swim or not. I think these traits which lie in people are what really inspire me. So many people who I look up to didn’t fall into the spot where they’re at now. The desire and determination inherent in these individuals, the vision to make change, and the sacrifices to achieve these dreams is what really inspires me. To persevere through hardship to make their dreams a reality, that's inspiring.

So ya, that’s what inspires me. Not all the time, but one of the many things which does sometimes, in case you were ever wondering.
